Windows XP Professional for Embedded Systems is technically identical to the standard version of Windows XP Professional used for general purpose computing devices, however with different licensing terms that are suitable for fixed function devices such as kiosks, ATM Systems, POS devices, industrial automation, and complex medical devices.
Windows XP Professional for Embedded Systems is part of the Windows Embedded Enterprise product family which also contains Windows Vista® for Embedded Systems. These products are fully functional versions of Microsoft’s desktop operating system intended for use in purpose-built hardware and application software.
Windows XP Professional for Embedded Systems is a mature stable product with excellent standards-based security, manageability and reliability, excellent plug and play capabilities, and innovative support services.
Windows XP Professional for Embedded Systems is suitable for embedded devices that have a need for Windows XP Professional application compatibility.

Availability and Support

While Windows XP Professional is no longer available in the Royalty Channel and will not be available in the System Builder Channel after January 31st, 2009, Windows XP Professional for Embedded Systems will continue to be available from your local Microsoft Authorized Embedded Authorized Distributors until December 2016.
OEMs that are building fixed function devices and buying from Microsoft directly will also be able to purchase Windows XP Professional for Embedded Systems through 2016.

These Distributors specialize in working with OEM’s on a wide variety of embedded devices and systems. They are fully trained and qualified on both technical and licensing aspects to offer advice and support through the product lifecycle.
